The 100^th year anniversary marks an important time for all NCTE members. For those of us in early childhood education this moment in time is particularly poignant, because with the creation of the Early Childhood Education Assembly we are officially recognized as a constituent group of the organization.

As I move on to the position of past chair I want to thank all of you for the opportunity to serve in the capacity of interim chair and chair. Your encouragement, support, and patience over the past three and a half years have been greatly appreciated. In particular I want to thank Jean Anne Clyde and the Early Childhood Issues Committee of the late 1990s for their vision of an NCTE that welcomes early childhood educators. Thanks to Carol Avery for putting the committee in place and Jerry Harste for keeping it going. I am also grateful for time spent with Susi Long with whom I had initial conversations that eventually led to the idea of the ECE Assembly. Debi Goodman, as past chair of the Elementary Section Steering Committee (ESSC), helped create a space for the ECEA at the ESSC table making it possible for us to participate in program planning for the annual convention and bringing to you the Day of Early Childhood. Thanks also goes to Laurie Katz, Barbara Z. Kiefer, Detra Price-Dennis, Melissa Wilson, and Patricia Enciso, past co-editors of Language Arts, who expanded the focus of the journal to include pre-K. Historically pre-school concerns have not always been addressed in the journal. Laurie and her co-editors even went as far as to devote a special issue that focused specifically on early literacy.

Thank you to Mariana Souto-Manning, Dinah Volk, Carol Felderman and Jeff Wood for the hours of work getting the ECEA off the ground and continuing to help iron out the kinks as we enter into our toddler years. Carmen Medina, Erin Miller and the Affirmative Action Committee have been instrumental in ensuring that issues of diversity and difference are kept at the forefront of our work. And of course thank you to the At-Large Members of the Board of Directors;Victoria Dixon-Mokeba, Amy Evans, Anne Haas Dyson, Celia Genishi, Julia Lopez-Robertson, Becky McCraw, Wayne Serebrin, and Katie Wood-Ray.

It took almost 100 years for us to be recognized in an official capacity at NCTE, so for the next 100 years it behooves us to make sure that early childhood concerns and issues continue to be part of the NCTE agenda. Here’s to the next 100!

Chicago is just around the corner! This year, Mariana Souto-Manning (Assistant Chair) has put together a wonderful Day of Early Childhood program on Saturday., Nov. 19,2011, that includes such early childhood educators and researchers as Lisa Cleaveland, Katie Wood-Ray, Kathryn Whitmore, Susie Long, Dinah Volk, Heidi Mills, and Ann Haas Dyson.

The ECEA Business meeting will also be held on Saturday, November 19, 2011 from 5:45 pm to 7:00 pm at the Chicago Hilton/PDR 3, Third Floor. Please attend as this is an opportunity for us to imagine possiblities for the ECE Assembly of NCTE.

Also, it's an election year! You should have received a link to an electronic ballot by now. If you have not and you are a current member please send us an email at eceassembly@gmail.com

Following are the positions we are voting on and a description of what each role entails.

The Assistant Chair:
1. In the temporary absence of the Chair, presides at all business meetings of ECEA and its Board of Directors.
2. Assists the Chair with managing the current ECEA Business Meeting at the NCTE Annual Convention.
3. Assists the Chair in preparing the Annual Report to NCTE.
4. Assists the Chair in planning for ECE involvement at NCTE’s annual convention.

The Treasurer:
1. Handles all financial transactions of the group.
2. Pays bills incurred by ECEA within the budget adopted by the Board of Directors.
3. Submits a written financial report that also includes a report on membership at the ECEA Annual Business Meeting and Board of Directors Meeting.
4. Notifies the Chair if at any time ECEA appears to violate the proviso that it shall not, without the express permission of the Executive Committee of NCTE, incur any obligation exceeding its funds.
5. Assists the other officers and committees in carrying out their responsibilities.
6. Serves as the IRS contact for tax-exempt reporting purposes.

Duties of the Board of Directors
1.Sets policies for the general operation of the organization.
2.Approves the budget and authorizes additional expenditures.
3.May authorize publication of monographs and special publications.
4.Sets dues for various classes of membership.
5.May propose amendments to the Bylaws.
6.Receives reports from officers and committees.
7.Plans for ECEA involvement in NCTE’s annual convention
8.Communicates with membership through the assembly newsletter or the annual business meeting.

Tips Memilih Pemutih Kulit Wajah

Setiap wanita selalu ingin menjaga penampilan agar nampak cantik dan menarik. Kulit wajah yang bersih dan mulus serta terlihat putih bersinar menjadi idamanan banyak wanita sehingga mereka tidak segan menggunakan berbagai produk pemutih wajah. Trend kulit wajah yang sering ditampilkan dalam pesan promosi di beberapa media adalah yang berwarna putih padahal ini kurang sesuai dengan kulit Wanita Indonesia rata-rata berwarna kuning, cokelat sampai sawo matang. Mungkin saja wanita dengan kulit putih akan terkesan lebih bersih, cantik dan menarik.

Bermacam Produk pemutih kulit yang bisa kita temukan dan jumpai di pasaran mulai dari skin care pemutih kulit, lotion, masker wajah, sabun, pelembab, lulur, bedak, dan lain-lain. Beberapa menampilkan janji manis bisa membuat kulit putih menjadi putih bersih dalam waktu singkat. Kita harus waspada dan berhati-hati karena tidak semua produk pemutih kulit tersebut aman saat digunakan karena mungkin saja bisa membahayakan kulit bahkan kesehatan kita.

Tips memilih pemutih kulit wajah yang aman :

Sebaiknya anda memilih produk pemutih kulit berbahan dasar alami seperti arbutin, licorice, kojic acid, white mulbery, alfa hydroxy acid, dan beta hydroxy acid. Baca tulisan pada kemasan produk untuk memperoleh informasi ini.

Hindari memilih bahan berbahaya seperti :

1. Merkuri, zat ini bisa membahayakan kulit dan kesehatan anda karena meracuni sistem saraf, merusak ginjal, dan dapat menyebabkan kanker.
2. Hidroquinon, zat ini menyebabkan kulit terasa sensitif ,iritasi kulit, terbakar, serta bisa ketergantungan.

Agar kulit wajah tetap nampak sehat, cobalah untuk olahraga teratur , mengkonsumsi makanan sehat (buah dan sayur), dan menjalankan pola hidup sehat.

Konsultasi ke dokter spesialis kulit atau ahli kecantikan agar mendapatkan informasi tentang jenis kulit wajah dan produk kecantikan yang sesuai.

Tips Memilih Kaos Anak

Kaos anak semakin banyak model, gaya dan coraknya mengikuti perkembangan mode dan trend. Baju anak laki-laki biasanya memiliki model yang lebih sederhana dibandingkan baju anak perempuan yang dibuat lebih modis dan variatif karena biasanya ibu senang bisa mendandani anak perempuannya dengan model baju terbaru dan aksesoris untuk membuat penampilan anak perempuan terlihat semakin cantik.

Orang tua seringkali menjadi lebih repot dan sibuk ketika memilih baju anak dibandingkan baju yang akan mereka kenakan sendiri. Padahal sebenarnya anak-anak tidak terlalu peduli pada baju yang akan mereka pakai selama itu baju tersebut terasa nyaman dan tidak mengganggu gerak tubuh saat bermain. Model baju anak terbaru memang penting agar anak terlihat cantik/tampa, lucu dan menggemaskan tetapi satu hal utama yang harus dipertimbangkan adalah kenayaman anak yang akan memakai baju tersebut ketika beraktifitas sehari-hari.

Anda sebagai orang tua harus bijaksana dan santai saat memilih baju untuk anak tercinta. Berikut ini beberapa tips memilih baju anak yang bisa anda coba :
1. Perhatikan usia anak dan ukuran. Saat usia tertentu perkembangan tubuh anak akan sangat cepat sehingga baju baru hanya bertahan sebentar yaitu sekitar 4 - 6 bulan dan harus segera diganti karena sudah kekecilan dan tidak cukup untuk dipakai lagi. Biasanya hal ini terjadi pada anak usia batita sehingga sebaiknya Anda memilih model baju anak klasik yang selalu modis setiap saat, misalnya adalah berbahan jeans dan kaos.
2. Perhatikan jenis bahan agar anak merasa nyaman saat memakainya. Sesuaikan dengan kebutuhan anak saat beraktifitas dan kondisi cuasa /musim setempat. Pemakaian baju yang tipis dan sedikit terbuka dengan bahan mudah menyerap keringat akan terasa nyaman saat udara panas, sebaliknya ketika cuaca terasa dingin maka disarankan memakai model baju yang tertutup dan berbahan tebal dan hangat untuk menjaga kesehatan anak.
3. Harga. Jika anda selalu mengikuti model baju anak terbaru maka bersiaplah saat anggaran rumah tangga tersedot ke sini. Maka, bersikaplah bijaksana dan jangan terlalu sering mengikuti trend mode yang ada. Model baju anak yang selalu tampak bagus setiap saat ketika dipakai adalah sebuah pilihan alternatif bagus yang tidak lekang waktu.

Happy Spring! Thank you to those of you who submitted proposals to the early childhood strand for the NCTE annual convention to be held in Chicago in November, 2011. As a result of your submissions, Mariana Souto-Manning, our Assistant Chair and Program Chair was able to create a very strong early childhood strand and Day of EC for the convention!

ECEA at NCTE 2009

It is hard to believe that the NCTE Annual Convention is just around the corner. The Early Childhood Education Assembly has certainly come a long way in a very short period of time. Having recently gained Assembly status, we are especially excited to catch up with all of you at the convention, and talk with you about ways of drawing attention to our early childhood group. Over the past several months the ECEA Board of Directors Officers, has been busy putting together sessions that focus on early childhood education. At the end of this post we will list various sessions to be held on the Day of ECE at the NCTE convention as well as share with you the ECE workshop we are sponsoring as a post convention event.

ECEA History

NCTE 2008

At the end of a very exciting Day of Early Childhood, at the annual convention, in November 2008, Deborah Wells Rowe gave a thought provoking keynote for which we hope to provide audio on this site in the near future.

Following Debbie's talk the proposed Early Childhood Education Assembly (ECEA) held a special interest group meeting to vote on various aspects of the assembly. The minutes from this meeting can be found in the column on the right hand side of this web page. Since this meeting, the ECEA leadership has worked diligently at submitting the necessary paperwork required to complete the process of gaining assembly status. In February, 2009, the NCTE Executive Committee voted on whether or not to award this status.

On March 24, 2009, Millie Davis, Division Director, Communications and Affiliate Services at NCTE contacted us to officially inform us that we had been granted Assembly status!
